But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. (John 19:33-36)
Why were Jesus legs not to be broken? Christ was destined to die from a broken heart and not from broken bones. Also, as an offering from our sins, His body would not have been acceptable by the Father if He were lame or limp or defective in any way. It was required that our Lord die physically as well as spiritually unimpaired. He died from a broken heart and as a willing and complete sacrifice for you and me.
His cleansing blood and the offering of His righteous robe finalizes and completes our salvation and our hope in eternal life. Let not Christ have going through all of this and we still lose our place in eternity with Him!
Our Father in heaven, thank you for all that you went through so that I could have eternal life. Anoint me to walk in your way so that your death is not in vain on my behalf. Amen!
Won’t you stop to thank Christ for His sacrifice for you?
